Tell me why MY VIEW of Christianity is wrong

i sometimes think the standard christian view of things is this.. mankind, like the people in new orleans after hurricane katrina, are stranded waiting on aid and god flys over and sees them on the roof waving and holding up signs, but, he can't really do as much as he would like to.. he has some stopgap aid here and there for a few, but, mostly everybody just has to do the best they can to hang on.. like federal aid or the national guard---jesus is coming!

Once again Terry you have demonstrated a most penetrating insight. There is nothing I can add or detract from your perception.

The belief God is not a luxury but a liability; an attempt to bring permanence and stability to a universe that is is constant flux with no set goal or certain conclusion.

There is comfort in embracing the uncertainty of our fragile existence but it takes courage and to accept that our ego is finite and there is no final goal planned for the universe.

AK Jeff - I have enjoyed your thoughtful input on this and many other threads - even though I seldom post much now.

How did you feel when they let a 10 year old boy stand up on the podium and a sister couldn't ?

one thing that really bothered me about the ministry school was letting a little boy around 10 years old read an outline and scripture.

he faced and addressed the audience.

he was actually teaching.

I was that boy.

I always wished I had been a girl and avoided being part of the WT circus.

In many ways the sisters get off lightly. They don't have to reach out of be judged on whether they are servants or elders.

They can just sit in the audience and secretly read a novel hidden inside their bible.

a few weeks back, in the midst of the haiti tragedy, much discussion took place in cyberland about the tolerance [or indeed the insistence on] suffering by a loving god.

the furor over haiti has settled a bit [as unfortunately most tragedy is wont to do far too quickly in the human mind], but this persistent matter continues to chew at my subconscience.

today i came across this:.

Either God doesn't exist and matter appeared out of nothing, or we aren't good.

Correct on both counts. God does not exist and we are not good. This is the first logical statement you have ever uttered Perry. Treasure the memory.

Why is it necessary that God be good?

if there is a sb (supreme being), there really isn't any logical necessity that it would conform in any manner to what we call "good".

it simply isn't a requirement, and yet for religious people it simply must be that god is good.. .

i wonder if it's love or fear, which causes people to cling to this idea.. .

First we would have prove the existence of god and the question would then answer itself.

Until that happens we are left to ponder the results of positive and negative behaviour. What we think is off as beneficial to us personaly we lable good. And what we perceive as harmful we lable bad.

Good and evil are simply concepts that are used to define the effect that peoples behaviour has on us or those we care about or identify with. Or what benefits us as a race of people or the human race as a whole. Good and evil are largely subjective terms that have no value without context. The idea of an invisible mystical creature roaming the earth trying to harm people is a trick of the mind. But then the mind is not entirely rational.

Why does God allow suffering? Well he is not responsible. As in all good fairy tales the dragon is to blame. He walks around like a roaring lion seeking to devour. It's all in the bible so it must be true.

I know God exists because I have a bible that tells me it was written by him. Irrefutable, unshakable logic, no less?

I can apply this same logic to the dragon and prove his existence also.

The inn I drink in is called the George & Dragon. Although I have met George, I have yet to meet the Dragon; but the dragon must exist because the inn exists and is named after him.

All things become clear if you use ‘Perry logic.’ Apply it twice daily for miraculous results.

This is why I now look in here about twice a year.

Delusion is of comfort only to those who are incapable of understanding the meaning of logic.

Perry are you really that dense or are you just here to wind people up?

the latest flip-flop (allbeit a minor one.).

the "wise instruction" (as described by the society) given is that sisters now have to wear head coverings when interpreting sign language public talks.. differs from the previous instructions that sisters didn't need to do so.. .

What is God's Will for us, right now ?

i ask because in wt literatrash ,and other christian writings,we often read that we need to be doing god's will now.. what exactly does he expect of me ?

i am willing, so to pinch a phrase "here i am,send me ".

If an all powerful God exists then no-one would be asking the title question. We would know with absolute certainty and be helped to carry out that will. The mystery that surrounds this question speaks louder than God.

The question that the human race should be asking is: What is our will for this planet and the children that we will leave behind?

In line with the original question, this is what I wrote after I left the Watchtower publishing company.

Whether a member loses his or her friends as a result of resignation or disfellowshipping, the emotional cost can be high.

In my own case I was never disfellowshipped but slowly moved from the centre of the organization to the edge as I became more and more disillusioned. It took some years to fully come to terms with the fact that what I had accepted as truth for all my life was in fact flawed.

I tried to stay and do the minimum required of a member to still be called a brother. In the end I could no longer live a lie and at the age of thirty, finally left the Kingdom Hall for the last time. Not one person ever called to ask why. They had realized from remarks I had made, that I had, in the words of the song, “ come to doubt all that I once held as true. ”

Unlike so many others I was fortunate enough to have a wife who felt the same as me, and we left together and built a new life, with new friends and a different and happier outlook. I was never officially disfellowshipped or disassociated but my relatives, all of whom are Witnesses except one brother, continue to shun me.
